Colombian Leader Warns 'I Would Take Up Arms Once More' if American Forces Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump and his Colombian counterpart have intensified the volume of their war of words, heightening strains bilaterally following American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has drug factories and production sites and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Escalating Rhetoric and Accusations

Addressing the press over the weekend, the US president suggested analogous use of force against Bogotá, stating the country faces serious problems and “run by an unwell individual who enjoys creating narcotics and distributing it to the United States."

While Colombia stands as the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the illicit industry.

A Frayed Alliance

The country for decades served as a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign combating drug cartels and enjoyed bipartisan support in the US capital, but relations have worsened markedly since Trump was elected.

The nation's narcotics trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions like one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters laid down arms following a landmark accord.

The President's Firm Rebuttal

Upon being questioned whether military intervention comparable to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good to me."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the last century, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"He comments without information. End the false accusations," he expressed online.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will become numerous insurgents in the hills. And should they arrest the president, which a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the populace," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Statesman

The president dedicated some years as a young man as a member of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate he did not engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he was involved in creating a new constitution in the early 90s and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the Colombian capital before winning the presidency.

"I made a vow to never again hold a weapon again ... but for the homeland I would take up the fight," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures and Widespread Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the national leader's security detail was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump, yet figures spanning the political spectrum have denounced the possibility of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Pressure

The US withdrew Petro’s visa after he encouraged American soldiers to ignore any illegal orders. In October, authorities imposed asset freezes targeting Petro, the first lady and various key allies.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its troop levels near Venezuela and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out attacks on boats in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
